I’m going to start this off by letting you know, this one is personal. There are countless blogs and TikToks out there that tell you what “You Need to Know Before Bringing Your Baby Home.” Truth be told, yes, there are a few things that you should know, like….don’t shake your baby, dont’ microwave breastmilk, don’t leave your baby unattetend next to a buring fame”…..The big one’s are obvoius.
Before having my own three children, I didn’t know the first thing about laobr and delivery, much less newborn care. I was experiencing things in real time and had no fucking clue what I was even doing. Turns out, my kids are now 14, 13, and 10 and are doing pretty damn good.
No, I’m not an expert in parenting but if you’re sitting down (or standing) reading this trying to figure out your personal parenting blueprint, this will be a bit of a disappoitment. I am a labor and postpartum doula and know a helll of a lot about newborn care but that wasn’t always the case. I spent countless hours trying to figure out what the hell I was doing (I’d give anything to see my 2012 Google search history) but no one knew my baby as well as I did.
I read all the books, listened to all the podcasts, watched all the YouTube videos (TikTok wasn’t a thing then but you bet I would be there too) but NOTHING could help me with MY baby. I worried about every little thing and shed tears when my expectation didn’t match reality (sound familiar?).
Here’s all I’m saying, YOU’RE ENOUGH, and just like me, you know YOUR baby better than anyone. There is no document or podcast you can listen too that will define your role as a parent, only you can do that.
What kind of parent do you strive to be? If you’re reading so far, my guess is, you want a gold star in this catetory.
If this is you and you’re questiong whether you’re enough, just know this, no bad parent worries about being a good parent. YOU, my friend, are enough.
If you are feeling unsure about this or need someone to talk to or teach you a thing or two, WE ARE YOUR DOULAS! We approach this work without bias or judgement and are by your side, every step of the way.
You can connect with your doula today! No need to walk this journey alone.
