Is This Labor?

If you’ve ever Googled “Is this labor or am I just uncomfortable?” at 2am… you are not alone. I can’t tell you how many Charlotte moms I’ve supported who were convinced they were either 1) definitely in labor or 2) definitely overreacting.

Spoiler alert: it’s usually somewhere in the middle.

Let’s talk about it.

The Truth No One Tells You

Labor doesn’t always show up like the movies. There’s no dramatic water breaking in the middle of Target (though honestly, that would make a great story). Most of the time, it starts subtly.

You might feel:

• Cramping that feels like period cramps
• Lower back ache that won’t quit
• Emotional & sensative
• Increased vaginal discharge
• Bursts of nesting energy
• Softer, more frequent bowl movements

And here’s the frustrating part: early labor can last hours or even days. I know. It’s annoying as hell.

So… Is It Labor or Not?

Here’s the easiest way to think about it:

False labor (aka prodromal labor):

• Contractions are irregular
• They don’t get stronger over time
• They might stop if you rest, hydrate, or change positions

Real labor:

• Contractions become consistent
• They get stronger, longer, and closer together
• They don’t go away, no matter what you do

If you’re timing contractions and thinking, “Wait… these are actually getting closer together…”okay, now we’re talking.

What About Your Water Breaking?

Only about 10–15% of people experience their water breaking before labor really kicks in. So if you’re waiting for that big “movie moment,” you might be waiting forever.

If your water does break, give your provider a call and check out guidance from American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists for next steps.

When Should You Call Someone?

A general rule is the 5-1-1 guideline:

• Contractions every 5 minutes
• Lasting 1 minute
• This has been going on for at least 1 hour

But honestly? If you’re unsure, call anyway. That’s what your provider—and your doula—is there for.
